Clayton, NC Tom Wilders, Dice West, Joe Santore, Ed Schulz Course is ~
80 miles from River Landing - plan about an hour and a half drive.
Played on a cold Monday in March. Normal Greens fees are listed as $59 before
1 PM and $49 after (On line in April you can sign up for $45) with signups
5 days in advance Staff was friendly but not too many people around due to
cold temperatures.
Dining room was available for lunch but not used other than for snacks.
The course was in good shape for winter golf. Fairways are Bermuda grass
and greens are Bent Grass. Course opened in 93/94 time period. Greens were
good, tees were level and in good condition. Many bunkers throughout the
course come into play but they were generally maintained in good condition.
Fairways are hilly with some blind tee shots and many elevation changes.
Width of fairways was good but rough ran downhill to trees/woods on a
number of holes. Several shots from uneven lies will need to be made.
White tees were listed at about 6100 yards with a rating of 67.1
and slope of 123. Tips were about 7,00 yards with a 133 slope.
Red tees were listed about 5500 yards and slope of 126. Practice
area had both grass tees as well as mats that Staff indicated were
alternated each day (atleast in the winter. Good size putting green
was also in the area.
There were only a couple forced carries, one of which is their signature
par three hole.
The course tests you with the elevation changes and uneven lies.

Date / time played – November 23 9:29 A.M.
Greens fee - $40 plus tax (with MB Golf Passport)
Outside staff – Friendly, but busy so didn’t have a lot of time to talk
Drive time - 1 hour and 50 minutes from RL
Course conditions:
Greens – Over seeded common Bermudagrass. Spotty. Uneven speed. Receptive to good shots. Overall, a disappointment.
Tees – Good. Level with nice ryegrass coverage
Bunkers – Numerous with some very deep pits. Stay out of them.
Fairways – Overseeded. Nice to hit off of. Lots of unfilled divots. No sand mix on carts. Some are pretty narrow.
Pace of play – SLOW, particularly the last 3 holes. 5 hour round.
Practice facility - OK. Large bag of balls for $4.50.
Restaurant – OK. Food nothing special, but view of Intracostal Waterway and boats was very nice.
Women friendly? - Many marsh carries and deep bunkers. I would not recommend for those who have difficulty with forced carries.
Value – Good value at this price. Would pay more if greens were in good conditions. Difficult scoring with greens the way they were.

Greens fee includes nice course layout book that is very useful.
Lots of tricky short holes that do not require driver from Red, White or Gold tees.
Blue tees measure 6,446 yards. 71.21 Course rating. 137 Slope
Members (White) tees were 6,035 yds. Course rating 70.2. Slope 127

Greens fee - $45 (with MB Golf Passport)
Outside staff – Friendly and informative
Drive time - 2 hours and 25 minutes from RL
Course conditions:
Greens – Converted to Champions Bermuda (Like River Landing) this summer. Heavy covering of sand which had not been rolled or raked in. Putted quite fast, but somewhat bumpy. Not as far along as our greens were at this stage.
Tees – OK. Level with nice ryegrass coverage, but some had not been cut.
Bunkers – Plentiful and deep. Stay out of if at all possible.
Fairways – Green. Overseeded. Very nice to hit off of. Sand mix on carts, but not many people using it. Many are quite narrow.
Pace of play – Slow. Played behind a group that would not let us play through until they stopped at the turn. Front nine in 2 ½ hours. Back nine in 1 ½.
Practice facility - OK. Large bag of balls for $3.50. Did not need as there are many unfinished bags on the range.
Restaurant – Did not utilize.
Women friendly? – This is a difficult course that I would not recommend for most women golfers. For that matter it is difficult for most men. Those ahead of us on the front nine didn’t belong.
Value – Good value at this price.

You need to hit it straight and long. And, you’d better have a decent sand game.

Clubhouse is fairly dated, but you don’t play the clubhouse.
You can see they are putting their $$ into the course rather than the clubhouse.
Fun course to play with few surprises. You can see most of the trouble from the tee. We will play again.
Members (White) tees are 6,402 yds. Course rating 70.5. Slope 130
Senior (Gold) tees are 5,729 yds. Rating 68.3. Slope 120

Fees: $125 with cart, range balls, tees and towels. Outside play must be referred and transportation to
Bald Head Island by ferry is $24.50 per person roundtrip from Deep Point Terminal at Southport. Must reserve ferry times. Pro shop will assist with this and arrange tram from terminal to course. Drive time to Southport, 80 min.
Website: www.bhiclub.net
Staff: Pro shop and outside staff helpful and accommodating.
Course conditions: Overall in excellent condition, greens fast and hard 10.5 or better similar to ours but a different variety of Bermuda , most are large, fairways are not overly demanding and water not a big factor unless you are in it…., and tee boxes are picturesque.
Gators: Alligators are plentiful but not aggressive only one chased Bonnie but she outran it. We saw at least a half dozen. One very large…approx. 16ft.
Tees: 4 sets Black 73.7/143 White 71.1/135 Gray 68.0/126 Teal 68.7/119
Bunkers: No fairway bunkers, only greenside. All other sand is waste areas.
Driving range and putting greens are in very good condition.
Value: This course is expensive but worth it, at least once, and with some preplanning can be more affordable. There is a deli and snack bar at the turn with call a head phone on the ninth tee. There are also many good restaurants in Southport. Our favorite is “Fishy Fishy.”

> Located between Jacksonville and Richlands Date played: Tuesday June 19 - 10:30 AM
Course Conditions: Greens: Small for most part- Good condition overall- slower than RL - Bermuda grass -
Tees: 5 sets of tees: Ground hard on some tees- played white - 6,132 yards - course rating 68.9 - slope 113
Bunkers: Need better maintenance and more sand
Fairways: Very firm - could use some water - fairly wide on most holes Pace of play: foursome finished in less than 4 hours
Practice Facility: Driving Range - very poor condition - 2 practice greens - one in only average condition - larger practice green - very good condition
Value: Fair - overall course conditions fair at best - $24 is a decent value for this course Comments: The four par 5's were the best holes on the course - liked number 9 and 18 - course is very flat - very little mounding - water on number of holes - only really in play on about 5 holes. Number 14 was best of the par fours, 420 yards from white tees with large pond across fairway at the 240 mark.
No water fountains or coolers on course - can buy water, gatorade, soda in proshop - only $1.50 for 20oz. gatorade or bring your own.
This course was fine for the cost.
